- 5.0 out of 5 stars from MKC -- The Price of Ambition : Blue Eyes Brown Eyes chronicles a unique chapter on race relations in this country which arose in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. The book tells the story of Jane Elliott, a small town, rural Iowa schoolteacher, who skyrocketed to national prominence as a result of a quickly-devised “experiment” (as the author characterized it), or “exercise” (as Elliot called it), to teach impressionable third-graders the effects of discrimination based on nothing more that a single, minor physical difference. Her efforts, while initially noble, turned needlessly cruel and intense as her zeal for the subject matter and her personal ambition coalesced into a national crusade embraced by teachers and national corporations eager to address the growing need for programs focused on racial diversity. Elliott stepped in to satisfy that need, and ultimately achieved widespread acclaim and significant monetary rewards for her anti-discrimination programs. However, she also left a trail of victims who were tragically scarred well into adulthood by her relentless insistence on a painfully realistic, deeply insensitive and divisive role-play to illustrate the effects of racism. Through revealing first-person interviews and historical references, the author meticulously recounts, not only the various effects of her methods on the small, exclusively white farming community of Riceville, Iowa, but also on the many adults who later experienced her harsh approach when her early classroom efforts expanded to become more commercial and far-reaching. Elliott’s story is a fascinating one. It provides an interesting historical perspective on small town life, the country, and the times, along with an enlightening study of the potentially caustic effects of unchecked human ambition. Jane Elliott, an Iowa school teacher, in the small town of Riceville was an innovator for her time. She created lessons that taught her third graders how to negotiate real life skills with a very creative flair; to learn math, they participated in an-in classroom general store. But on the eve of MLK's assassination, Elliott is presumably struck with her most innovative lesson yet. She will separate her blue eyed students from the brown eyed students to teach them what it feels like to be Black in America. It begins as a critical lesson attempting to convey the horror of racism, but soon morphs into something much more sinister. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2021 )
