:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Henvai -- You are here for a treat : As an avid reader of all Jin Yong’s (金庸) Wu Xia novels in Hong Kong like all my boy schoolmates, I never dream any of the novels alike can be translated into English, it is so Chinese with every bit of story involved ancient Chinese traditions and beliefs not just the martial arts which by itself are very complicated. The word Jiang Hu (江湖), the underworld where all the knights (Wu Xia) conduct their business and power struggles is virtually non translatable. Jiang Hu has its own sets of rules, ethics, loyalty, and sometimes its moral standard far exceeds that of the government officials. Amidst all the tortuous plots, endearing romances, faithful brotherhood, contesting factions, it also comes with hidden principles and beliefs of Confucianism, Daoism… This book is written completely in English by someone who has been thoroughly exposed to the dual cultures yet probably not as well versed in Chinese language. But after I have read thru the novel in one breath, I could not help but applaud Yu’s skill and accomplishment. The devoid of much Chinese baggage perhaps even better helps the English readers to comprehend the essence of this Chinese fictional classic. On the whole the story is truly that of the Chinese Wu Xia, it grips me the same way as Jin Yong’s did in my youth, from the beginning to the end. The plot is full of twist and turn, surprise after surprise, romance is pure and moving, and loyalties are unbreakable, various factions with its forms of martial arts, poisons and its way of delivery, principles of conducts and brotherhood are all in display. The main character, Feng, being taught and trained by friends and enemies, finally merges as the knight of Chivalry. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2021 )

Every plot twist kept me guessing and, even when the story came to an end, I was left wanting more. This is a worthy read that you won’t regret starting and hungrily finishing, even when things don’t turn out as you expect or hope. I finished it from cover-to-cover in 7 continuous hours. The fight and battles scenes are vivid and the landscape depictions are stunning. It is a captivating and epic tale of war, endless betrayal, family devotion, and love. The characters, particularly Feng and Ming, are well-developed. Yu intricately designed the war strategies that have a filmic quality in the novel. The novel was so dazzling that I read through all 340 pages in 24 hours. Once again, Yu has poured his heart and soul into his latest novel. A true joy to read. I eagerly anticipate the sequel.
